Tobias Wegner was born in 1980 in Heidelberg, Germany and in his early days already had strong feelings for circus clowns and the fine comedy of the silent movie era. In order to make this passion a profession, he went to study in Brussels at the renowned University for Contemporary Circus Arts – École Supérieure des Arts du Cirque – and graduated in 2003 as a specialist for partner and trampoline acrobatics.
Ever since, he has been working in various projects covering and interweaving the genres of circus, dance, theatre and even opera, moving between Berlin, Frankfurt, London, Paris and New York. Tobias Wegner is one of the circusnext laureates in 2007 with the artistic project “AIUAIO” (circus – dance – music) with Gabriel Galindez Cruz, Stefan Sing, Milian Vogel (production: Claudius Bensch).
After developing “The Wallclown”, his biggest success to date has been the creation of „LEO“ – an evening-filling solo performance by Wegner which is based on the „Wallclown principle“ of inverted gravity.
The show was developed by Wegner and a creative team of 4, supported by a Berlin-based production company and launched at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival of 2011, where it immediately walked off with the first three of a total six major awards. The accolade of the “Best of Edinburgh” award took LEO to New York’s Off- Broadway “Theatre Row” for a month-long run.
The show is currently touring worldwide and has been invited to major theatres and festivals in cities such as Vancouver, Montréal, St. Louis, New York, Miami, Madrid, London, Berlin, Teheran, Harare, Moscow, Hong Kong, Adelaide, Melbourne and Auckland.
